Where Numbers Must Be Written Out
Banks, accountants, and lawyers still live in a world where a number is not a number until it is spelled out. Cheques require the amount in words. Contracts state totals as "one hundred twenty-three thousand dollars (123,000)" to prevent forgery. Exam papers and academic style guides demand written numbers in prose. Doing that by hand for 987,654 is slow and error-prone β and one wrong word invalidates the whole document. Our Number to Words converter produces the exact written form of any integer up to 999 trillion, instantly, with ordinal and currency modes built in.
Cardinal vs Ordinal vs Currency
- Cardinal β the default: 21 β "twenty-one", 1,234,567 β "one million two hundred thirty-four thousand five hundred sixty-seven". Used in prose and most documents.
- Ordinal β position words: 1 β "first", 2 β "second", 22 β "twenty-second", 100 β "one hundredth". Used for dates, rankings, and chapters.
- Currency β appends the dollars wording: 1500 β "one thousand five hundred dollars", with correct singular handling for 1.
- Decimals β digits after the point are read digit-by-digit: 3.14 β "three point one four", the convention used for reading measurements aloud.
How the Conversion Algorithm Works
English number names are built from three-digit groups, so the algorithm splits the number into groups of 1,000, converts each group (hundreds + tens + ones) independently, and attaches the matching scale word β thousand, million, billion, trillion. The irregularities of English are hard-coded: eleven through nineteen, hyphenated compounds like forty-two, and ordinal mutations like five β fifth and twenty β twentieth. Because every step is deterministic arithmetic β no dictionary guessing β the output is exact for the full supported range.
Common Uses
- Accounting: fill the "amount in words" field of invoices and cheques; verify the digits with the Percentage Calculator before writing.
- Legal drafting: write contract amounts in words with the numeral in parentheses.
- Teaching and ESL: generate correct examples for number-spelling practice.
- Accessibility: produce spoken-style text alternatives for figures in documents.
Private and Exact
The conversion runs entirely in your browser using plain integer arithmetic β no rounding, no floating-point surprises for integers within the supported range. Nothing you type is transmitted anywhere.
