Two Lists, Three Questions, One Answer Screen
Every list-comparison problem reduces to three questions: what do they share? what is missing from each? what does the combined set look like? Spreadsheets make you write VLOOKUP formulas and fight with #N/A errors; a script means writing set logic and plumbing. Our Compare Two Lists tool answers all three questions live as you paste: the intersection, the items unique to each side, and a deduplicated merge β each with a count and one-click copy.
Real-World Uses
- Email marketing: compare last month's subscribers against this month's to find who unsubscribed (only in A) and who joined (only in B). Verify addresses first with the Email Validator.
- Inventory and SKUs: check which products disappeared from a supplier feed overnight.
- Backlink audits: diff this month's linking domains against last month's to spot lost links.
- Recruiting and grading: compare submitted student IDs against the roster to find missing submissions.
Why "Apple β apple" Matters
Real data is inconsistent. The same person appears as Jane Doe in one export and jane doe in another, and trailing spaces make otherwise identical rows differ. The Ignore case and Trim whitespace toggles normalize both lists before comparing, so human-invisible differences do not produce false "unique" items. If you need heavier normalization β HTML, accents, invisible characters β run both lists through the Text Cleaner first, then compare.
How It Works
Under the hood the tool builds JavaScript Set objects from both lists and computes the intersection, the two set differences, and the union in linear time β O(n) rather than the O(nΒ²) of naive row-by-row comparison. That is why it stays instant even with tens of thousands of lines on each side. Everything runs in your browser; neither list is ever uploaded.
